Exercise at 40+

Exercise at 40+ Now that I'm in my 40s, I'm finding I don't have to 'kill it' every time I work out, lol.  I'm glad I went all out in my late 20s/early 30s (pre injuries) - I really gained a great foundation and muscle memory.  I had the ambition, energy and time to do it, and it served me well.  Now when I lift, I still train with intensity and have some great lifting sessions, but it doesn't have to be 4 days a week.  I suppose what's really changed is intention and energy. Key areas at this stage of my life are nutrition, movement, mobility and stress management.  I know what to eat on a daily basis - it's a no brainer.  When I go to a party, event or restaurant, I enjoy what's at hand in bite size pieces.  I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, and find joy in where I am and what I'm eating. When...

Let’s raid your kitchen!

Let's raid your kitchen! In observance of National Nutrition Month, March 2011, let's explore your kitchen. If so, clean it out!  Just as it is an unhealthy practice to have clutter around your home, your fridge is no different.  After all, this is the place you are seeking to fuel your body from! You should be able to readily see and access your food.  It becomes much simpler when it's stocked well.  If you have compartments for fruit, veggies, meats, etc. - use them. ...

Lose 10lbs, take a load off your Heart Are you being realistic about your weight loss?  Are you being honest with yourself about your weight loss?  Do you say you only have 20lbs to lose and you know it's really more like 40?  The truth can be hard to absorb sometimes. Having a distorted reality can come from several places.  We may be caught in a certain 'story', we may have lost our voice somewhere along the way, we may have adopted someone else's perspective, we may have given up.  It all boils down to truth. Are you living the life you want now?  If not, what are you going to do about it?  It is a challenge to be in the 'in between' space, no doubt.  You know the place where you're challenged by something from the past and haven't moved into your now.  Happens all the time.  You may be wondering, 'how did I get here'.  Don't ponder it too long,...

Boost your Brain, Feed your Heart

Boost your Brain, Feed your Heart I do all I can to keep myself in a healthy zone, especially after being with my mother while she had one of her first strokes.  After her stroke, my mother was very disoriented and had slurred speech, as if she were drunk.  On her first few strokes, this state would last for a few days, and then she would come around, losing more memory each time, until she eventually succumbed to vascular dementia. If you are susceptible to the risk of stroke, you may be interested to know there is a tie in to improving your brain power.  Studies have shown cognitive skills, as well as nutrition and exercise, help put you in a better position to ward off a stroke.  You can't change your genetics, but you can make Lifestyle changes to improve your risk factors. Try a few simple cognitive tasks that will help your 'noggin' to keep functioning: crosswords, puzzles, search and finds are...
