During a training session earlier, I put my client on ‘cruise control’ on the treadmill. He was on a treadmill made by TRUE™ which offers this neat little feature. Just as in a car, you set the limits you want – in this case, for your heart rate. If you fall out of your zone, the treadmill recognizes that and will change settings to put you back in. How cool is that?!
It got me thinking, hmmm…. how else can we apply that! Let’s play with that for a minute. Imagine you’re all pumped up, then some thought flashes you in your head and you crash. Ever had that happen? Most likely yes. What if you could blast that thought as quick as it came in? Neat trick, huh?!
“From the brain and the brain alone arise our pleasures, joys, laughter and jests, as well as our sorrows, pains and griefs” ~ Hippocrates
That’s our quest – to see how we can be on cruise control to roll on down the highway of life. Do you know the functions of cruise control? I didn’t until recently as I’ve been in a 65 Mustang & 91 Jeep. Res – resume, Acc – accelerate, Cruise, Set, Coast. Imagine if your life was that easy. It can be!
Ok, here’s what to do. The next time one of those defeating thoughts creeps into your grey matter, you’re gonna flex your muscle and snap it. Talk back to it – loudly! Tell that inner demon, you’re done with it, it has no power or influence over you. That’s how fast you can accelerate! And it is that easy. Do this over and over with thoughts, words, actions that you mindlessly fall into. This is your wake up call to do something different and start cruisin!
This was an enjoyable read. It made me look at myself. Gosh, I am a control freak. I cringed reading about cruise control while working out or driving. I think I have some work to do on letting go and learning to go with the flow. *giggle, smile* Thanks for the reminders this a.m. I needed it.
Thanks for sharing Lisa….. going with the flow is a nice cruise
Begin letting go of all the small stuff that doesn’t serve you. The
deeper stuff will begin to surface for you to take a look at & decide
what you want to reset or let go of. Get ya giggle on! P
I often fall into cruise control- while cruising. I have the ability (curse) to multi-task (actually, it’s time slicing- doing something else during the spaces between words and other thoughts). So, if I am driving (primary brain activity) and talking (typically with my kids), and considering a client issue (often), it is not atypical for me to enter cruise control. What that really means is that I end up going along the most traveled route (mine, not yours- it’s my brain that is seeking comfort) on the highway I am. Unfortunately, that may not be the destination… Jolt- hit the brakes- course correction…
You’ve got a system there, man! I think a detour is in it for
you from time to time, Ron – cruise another highway.
What is your destination?!
Hitting the brakes will definitely jolt you out of the
comfort zone. Reset & accelerate! P
