★ROCK STAR MONDAY★: SLASH
SLASH is one of the greatest R★CK guitarists of all time. Born in the UK, Slash lived there with his father and paternal grandparents until the age of 5. He and his father then joined his mother, who had moved to L.A. to pursue her career as a designer. Fighting, seperation, and alcohol split his parents and he became a ‘problem child.’ When his mother went on the road, he stayed with her mother, whom he loved and felt grounded by.
As a teen, Slash was influenced by Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath. A BMX champion, he gave it up after taking guitar lessons and listening to his teacher play Led Zeppelin and Cream. He practiced up to 12 hours a day. He joined his first band at 17, and formed his own 2 years later.
Guns N’ Roses
This L.A. based band played all the local favorites…… The Troubador, Whiskey and The Roxy, as well as opening for major acts. They wrote their best stuff at the beginning and didn’t get a record deal until March 1986, almost a year after Slash joined the band. Their debut album was put on hold because of his drug problem.
The band had great success amidst drug abuse and falling outs, and went on to release 5 albums. Hits included “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” and “Paradise City.” Slash officially quite in 1996, after 3 yrs of inactivity from GN’R. His riffs and solos in this band are among the most highly acclaimed in the music industry.
Snakepit, Revolver & Solo
After his spilt from GN’R, Slash went on to form his own band with former GN’R bandmate, Matt Sorum called Snakepit. An album and tour took them through 2 years. Slash disbanded Snakepit and brought it to revival a few years later and release a second album. He then disbanded it again and toured with a blues cover band.
He called upon Sorum again for Velvet Revolver. They were also joined by GN’Rs Duff McKagan. They eventually landed Scott Weiland on vocals. Their debut album hit #1 and sold over 2 million copies. Slash still had it. He was seen as a headliner, and the released their second effort, Libertad, and once again went on tour. In 2008 Weiland returned to Stone Temple Pilots and the band, unable to find a new lead singer went on to other projects.
Slash’s solo career has seen him collaborate with Michael Jackson, Carole King, Lenny Kravitz and Alice Cooper. His solo album, Slash featured Ozzy, Iggy, Fergie, Adam Levine, Dave Grohl and Chris Cornell.
“Risk isn’t a word in my vocabulary, it’s my very Existance.” Slash
