★ROCK STAR MONDAY★:  METALLICA

32 years in the music industry and Metallica is still going strong with a fan following which does not show signs of disappearing soon and a possible movie in the making. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the two remaining original members seem to have gotten their formula right – music matters, fans matter, relationships matter. Other than that, nothing else matters.

The band faced bereavement on September 27th 1986 during the European leg of the band’s Damage, Inc. Tour when their tour bus skidded and the driver lost control near Dorarp in Sweden. Cliff Burton died in this tragic accident and the future of the band was at stake. The band members felt that Burton would have wanted them to continue making music and with the blessing of Burton’s family, they looked for a replacement. Of the nearly 40 people who auditioned, it was Jason Newsted who was chosen to replace Burton.

Relationships matter to Metallica and in 1987, they released a video titled Cliff ‘Em All to commemorate and acknowledge Burton’s 3 years with Metallica. They transformed their collective grief into a beautiful tribute to Cliff Burton. They did not forget his role in the making of Metallica.

Nothing Else Matters

Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield wrote the song “Nothing Else Matters” while on the phone with his then girlfriend. Phone in one hand, he plucked the four open strings of a standard E-minor chord with the other hand which eventually made up the first 2 bars of the song. Nothing Else Matters, now a staple in Metallica’s live performances was originally dedicated to his girlfriend indicating the bond they shared and was not meant to be released but drummer Lars Ulrich heard it and it was included in the Group’s self-titled fifth studio album Metallica.

This power ballad which has since been dedicated to their fans, peaked at number 11 on the
Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart as well as top-ten positions on many European charts. “Nothing Else Matters” was featured as a playable track in the music video game Guitar Hero: Metallica. The song, which strikes a chord in every heart that hears it, has been covered over forty times. Relationships do matter!

What Matters Most to You?
How busy have you been running after your career, your ambitions to forget that relationships matter? When was the last time you reached out to family, friends and loved ones to let them know they matter to you? Are you still in touch with friends and colleagues who supported you while you found your way to the road to Success? Hetfield and Ulrich understood the value of relationships even though they were members of one of the world’s most famous heavy metal band and on the road away from the relationships that gave them stability. Appreciate your relationships whether with family, friends, colleagues or business partners and reach out today to let someone know the role they play in your Life. You’ll feel the abundance of love out there, just waiting for you to reach out and ask.

  • I value relationships deeply – with my family, friends, colleagues & clients. I feel fortunate and “rich” in friendships.
And, I’ve had many friends (in different parts of the country) tell me I’m the “glue” that holds them together. That means a lot to me.
One thing I value about blogging and social networking is the opportunity I’ve had to “meet” people virtually.
    Thanks Vatsala & Paula.
